First Day...math tweets as a ticket out the door

So this year I opted to do something different with my students on the first day...last year I did sticky notes, this year I did a math tweet. They had the sentence frame, "Math is _____because____". Here are some of my responses. :P

"Math is challenging because it makes me think."
"Math is challenging because some problems require you to push yourself"  (These two hit the nail on the head with our CCSS habits of mind.)

"Math is awesome because it teaches you skills" (For some reason Napolean Dynomite goes through my head.)

"Math is nerve-racking because there is a lot you have to remember for any type of quiz or final."
"Math is hard because it involves a lot of rules and rules are hard to learn."
"Math is fairly challenging to learn because there are many formulas to memerize." (I'm saddened by the fact that a few students see math as rules, formulas, and equations...)

"Math is interesting because it can either be easy or hard depending on how someone approaches the lesson."
"Math is awesome when you are learning new things the environment is good and feels good."
"Math is fun because we learn more about new things."
(What can I say...I just want to cuddle up in those tweets!)

"Math is useless because I have a calculator, but don't worry I love it."
"Math is boring because there are no sports involved."
"Math is my second favorite subject because I don't like the other subjects."
(My gangsta math peeps! :P )

And then my heart-breakers...
"Math is hard because I can't do it."
"Math is difficult because I'm not good at it."

I hope to turn all my heart-breakers around this year, continue to inspire those who find it fun, interesting, awesome, push those who find it challenging to make a world a better place for them, help those who just see math as formulas to realize there is so much more, and of course keep building those skills....like "nunchuck skills, bo huntin skills, computer hacking skills,....great skills."  just kidding~ You know I meant math skills right?? :P
